Support Worker : GAIL MORRIS
Time-Banking meeting for Tuesday 23rd January @ Megabytes Café 5.00pm.
We are pleased in announcing that the Time-Banking Scheme has just been granted monies from Ground Work Trust. We will be purchasing new equipment for the Scheme which will enable the scheme to go forward with helping the community. All of the young people who are registered on the Time Banking Scheme would like to thank the Ground Work Team and the members of the Environmental Forum, for making this possible.
The projects that are underway at the present are the clean-up of the bowling green and the international garden. As a big thank you to all the young people involved, The Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Youth and Community Project will be treating them to a day out. This is to be decided by the young people on where they would like to go.
If there are any young people aged between 11 and 25 who would like to join our scheme please call into Megabytes for more information.
There are currently nineteen young people enrolled on this scheme with scope for many more.
Within the project the young people have involved themselves in numerous activities such as environmental work including litter picks in and around Merthyr Vale including the Aberfan Memorial site.
Time Banking has also worked with the Groundwork Trust which included cleaning areas of the Taff Trail, consultation work and bulb planting. Other areas where the young people have assisted are with local businesses involving clearing rooms for office space, painting, leaflet and newsletter drops.
A keen interest has matured to improve relations between the elderly members of the community and the younger generation. Young people achieved this through working with the ‘Dial A Ride’ scheme where young people assisted the elderly on and off buses, carried their shopping and chatted to them about general issues and topics relevant to them on the day.
Ty Bryngoleu Residential Home have used the Time Banking members have been up there weeding, planting and removing old shrubs. During severe winter conditions where paths and roads gathered ice the young people gritted these areas to prevent possible falls and accidents to the elderly.
The young people also attend courses from computers to health and safety training in gardening equipment, the latter now enables the young people to help maintain gardens in older people’s homes. Time Banking has also been involved with numerous community events and shows. Some of the members are involved in other projects such as a Youth Forum and the Activities for Young People Initiative, with these projects the young people have a say on what goes on in their own community and are invited to local resident meetings for them to give their view and opinion on problems in the area and how to take these ideas forward.
The young people have contributed a staggering 937 hours of their own free time to the community and for all their hard work they have been rewarded with trips to Heatherton Park, Winter Wonderland, Paint Balling and a residential to Cardiff. All these activities have been fun events as well as educational. The Time Banking Scheme is very well known around the Aberfan and Merthyr Vale area by all the local people who speak very highly of the Scheme, there are often requests to ask the young people in assisting with garden work and any other jobs that need doing.
